Chapter Fifteen

Alison stifled a yawn as she pulled her Fiat Spider out of the Brownstone Building garage and onto the street. Her team had spent the day training and on standby. Jerry’s team hadn’t needed any help on their low-key job to escort some corporate executives to and from a meeting on Mercer Island.

I act like crazy shit happens every day, but it doesn’t. Sure, dangerous and weird stuff happens to me more often than to a lot of people, but I have plenty of downtime. I have to remember that and not always see a dark wizard hiding behind every trash can or delivery drone.

She still hadn’t fully adjusted to the idea that her company made money even when she wasn’t directly involved. Not being a control freak helped, but it remained weird to receive a call or text and realize she had earned a fat paycheck for sending someone else to do something.

Heavy is the crown there, princess.

Alison chuckled.

For now, though, the upcoming Nereid job would require the Dark Princess and her courtiers, not Jerry and his non-magical team. Ava and Mason had already worked out the practical travel arrangements with Abigail.

They’d use one of her corporate jets and the CEO client was comfortable that the Brownstone team thoroughly inspect the plane before they took off. The pilot was a man who had worked for Abigail for years, and Ava and Tahir had already performed a background check and found nothing questionable.

I let my first few months of jobs throw off my sense of expectation. Most jobs don’t end in some big showdown, especially if people know I’m involved. Sometimes, it’s merely a matter of a show of force.

There was one last matter she needed to clear up before they left in a couple of days.

After she’d turned at an intersection, she set her phone to speaker mode and dialed Drysi Jones. Tahir had done a deep background check on the witch and everything matched up with the few scraps Alison had learned from the other woman.

The Jones family’s once impressive wealth was long gone, and Drysi had scraped by as a bounty hunter. The real surprise was that her money troubles weren’t because she didn’t score impressive bounties. From what they could tell, it was because she gave large amounts of her money away after she’d earned it.

Alison was concerned at first and wondered if Drysi was being blackmailed. Tahir’s investigation established that the people who received money were all members of families who used to work for the Jones family but were now in financial distress. It was an actual example of noblesse oblige.

Mason thought Alison had the world on her shoulders, but it wasn’t like she gave all her money to old Drow servants.

No. Merely her diseases.

Damn it. That was Myna’s choice, and I’ll respect that. The only thing left is to move forward.

She cleared her throat as she waited for the call to connect.

“I won’t lie. I didn’t expect a call from the Dark Princess so soon.
